27A – Reading Reflection No. 3

Coco Chanel by Lisa Chaney

1)
What surprised me the most about Coco Chanel is that she had a challenging childhood growing up. She lost her mother when she was 12 and her father put her in an orphanage. I could understand her father may not have been able to take care of her as he had a job. However, I can't imagine how she must have felt in such an unstable environment for 12 yrs old girl. So I truly admire her in her childhood, because, in many ways, she is a strong person. The reason why she grew up to be successful is that even at a young age, she was determined to not let her harsh environment decide how her life is. The least thing I admire about her is that she was in love with a Nazi officer, Hans Gunther, who was a German writer who has a major influence about Nazi racialist thought. I was a bit disappointed with her choice of her lover.

2)
I say one of the competencies she has is she is a queen of innovative creation. She is a good listener as well, so she understood the needs of her potential clients want in style and the functionality. Some designers may be in their own world and some times their works are not in line with what customers want.

3)
Nothing really confused me in this book, to be honest. The only confusion. I say, there is that at the time when this book was published, there were several other books about Chanel by different authors were published as well. So, they all have different tales to tell about her life. So I thought it was fascinating.

4)
If I were to meet her in person and ask her questions, I would ask her why she dated questionable men and is that because there was no strong and healthy male figure in her life was lacking?

5)
This is one of her quotes, "Success if most often achieved by those who don't know that failure is inevitable." This quote touched my heart. It basically says it all about her work ethics and how she is not afraid to fail. Just by reading this quote, I can tell she got to where she was at by giving her the best of her best effort, every time. I can learn a lot from her.

  1. Hey Byung, great job on your post this week. It looks like that you got a new perspective on another entrepreneur through this book. I can see that the thing that stuck out the most to you is her relationships. I think the questions you would ask her, if you could, is interesting because it is about her personal life instead her professional life.

  2. Hey Byung,

I liked reading your post. It is inspiring to hear stories of people who truly self-made their careers. I liked her quote "Success is most often achieved by those who don't know that failure is inevitable". To me, Chanel is expressing that successful people do not even view failures as a failure, but an opportunity to improve and progress further.
