13A – Reading Reflection No. 1
Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future
I enjoyed reading this biography. It gave more outlook on how he came to his succession. I can relate to his values and belief in his personal life and for his business. What surprised me the most was that he was one of the founders of Paypal. I use this service often and I appreciate how it makes my life easier. If I have to pick one of his traits, I admire his never-giving-up spirit. I believe he can persevere any hardships that come into his life. And his rough childhood like parental divorce and getting bullied is one of the evidence that he is a strong person that he can overcome challenges. The part that I least admire is the recent time when he conducted an interview smoking marijuana; that was a bit unprofessional if you are in the position of representing a company. As his career progressed, he had moments of bankruptcy in his previous companies, but he didn't give up. He went out of his way to overcome that hurdle.
Based on my observation, he is a very adventurous person. He's like a venture capitalist, he is walking an uncharted territory. It's very risky but if you're successful, the return is high. I think it takes certain sets of characteristics to be someone who invests in this type of entrepreneurship.
If I have a chance to ask Elon some questions, I would ask why his business visions are focused on innovation, revolution, and future. Why do these uncharted areas are worthy of investing? Musk is one of the hardest working entrepreneurs I've ever seen. There is a reason why people say he's a workaholic. But I think if he truly enjoys what he does and all he is doing is following his passion to make meaningful products for the humanity, he wouldn't consider it as a work in the first place.

Hey Byung,
ReplyDeleteI also read that book and it also gave me a different perspective of Musk as a person. About his smoking marijuana with Joe Rogan, I think it was actually an important moment for everyone involved. I think it cements his status as a "normal guy", who's different to the stereotypical corporate suit or CEO we've come to know.
Although I didn't read the Elon Musk biography, it is good to know that I can get someone's point of view on the book. If you had the chance to talk to Elon, I think you came up with a great question for him. I would also want to know why his visions are based mainly on those aspects and how it helped him become so successful.
