20A – Growing Your Social Capital
Person No.1
Kimber has experience of running a photography company for more than 3 years. She does shooting as a photographer and her husband operates the business. Thus, she is my domain expert. When I moved to Gainesville, I was looking for any open photographer position, so I started to make cold calls to studios around Gainesville. When Kimber and I started talking, we clicked instantly. She never thought about having an assistant photographer, but with the growing business of hers, she wanted to consider hiring me. In the end, I didn't end up working for her but she wanted to meet in person over dinner and help me network with other photographers and business in town. She was kind enough to take me to a local networking event and introduced me around to several business owners. Since I was new to the town, getting to know someone like Kimber who has shot here for the last two years and now has a fairly strong clientele base and worked with many local vendors and venues, I've gained valuable knowledge on the important insider information.
Person No.2:
Sabrie Images is a photography company serving in SWFL for the past 18 years. It specializes in different types of photography such as weddings, family portraits, corporate events, real estate photography. It also offers mini photo sessions for affiliated local resort guests. In this case, Sabrie Images will be the market expert. I got in contact with the company via a friend of mine. Some of the most invaluable information I received from the company is that places such as SWFL have many more people traveling for vacation and provides a great market for destination photo shoots such as weddings and family beach portrait. Sabrie Images gives me real-world experience.
Person No.3:
Bill Boyton is an executive manager in Pinkshell Resort in Fort Myers Beach, FL. He has been overseeing the everyday operation of the resort and he is the person who makes the final decision about which vendors will be working with the resort. He will be my potential supplier. I met while working at the vendor in Pinkshell resort. He allowed me to operate a desk in the main lobby that gave resort guests easy access to booking photoshoots. Boyton management group owns other prestigious resort in Florida including Pinkshell resort. A recommendation from him would allow me to land an exclusive photography vendor contract with other resorts in Boyton Management.
